On behalf of all the members of the Lexington Division of Police, I want to attempt to express our feelings of gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of sympathy and support we received following the tragic death of Officer Bryan J. Durman.
Thursday, April 29, will long be remembered as one of the darkest days in the history of our agency. A fine young man — loving husband, doting father and dedicated public servant — was tragically taken from our midst while proudly performing his duties.
In the ensuing hours and days, our devastated police family closed ranks and comforted each other while struggling to cope with the heartbreak, the suddenness and the profoundness of our loss.
Each and every day we stand vigilant, ready to faithfully protect and serve our community. However, during our most difficult and painful time it was you — the citizens of Lexington and the entire Bluegrass region — who faithfully encircled, protected and served all of us.
Their protection and service assumed many forms, including: innumerable gestures of kindness and expressions of sympathy, attending the visitation and funeral, and generously contributing to the long-term support of Officer Durman's family.
They even demonstrated their willingness to stand vigilant for us, as thousands of you lined the route of the funeral procession. There are no words to describe the emotional impact and great consolation we all felt as, mile after solemn mile, we witnessed your silent tributes of respect for our fallen officer, your sympathy for both his family and his public safety family, and your understanding of our need and desire to mourn his loss with you — our community.
Their presence and patience, the signs and flags, salutes and hand-covered hearts all meant so much more to us than we have the ability to express.
We will never forget Officer Durman's ultimate sacrifice. The depth and pain of our sorrow will long reside in our hearts. Something else will also live on in our hearts — just beneath the badges we so proudly wear each day — the powerful imagery of your support, your encouragement and your respect. Those heartfelt, enduring memories we likewise will never forget.
We must also gratefully acknowledge the unparalleled reinforcement and strength we received from countless law enforcement and public safety agencies from across the state and beyond. Their professional and dedicated efforts are truly appreciated.
After observing the public's expression of support during the funeral and procession, many were moved to comment how fortunate we are to have such a unique bond with those we serve. We assured them that while we always knew we could count on our truly extraordinary community, we have been humbled beyond measure by all we have witnessed and received during this incomprehensible tragedy.
Today, as always, the members of the Lexington Division of Police are proud and honored to serve and protect our special community.
