BENTON, Ill. — Police said a Kentucky man wanted on a charge of attempted murder killed himself after police in Illinois stopped his truck on Interstate 57 near Benton.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reported that Timothy S. Johnson, 39, of Sturgis shot himself Friday as officers approached his vehicle, just north of the Benton-West City exit.
Johnson died at Franklin Hospital.
Illinois State Police spokesman David Sneed said Johnson was wanted for allegedly shooting his wife in the leg Friday morning in Union County, Ky.

Police learned that Johnson might be in the Mount Vernon area and broadcast a description of his truck.
A state trooper spotted Johnson traveling south on the interstate and followed him until more officers could arrive.
Johnson stopped his truck after police blocked traffic in both directions.
