Lexington is lucky to have four top-notch municipal golf facilities in the Gay Brewer Jr. Course at Picadome, Kearney Hill Links, Lakeside and Tates Creek.
Mike Fields (no relation), director of golf for Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, came up with a "dream 18" by selecting holes from each of the four courses. Here's his daunting 6,978-yard, par 72 layout:
Front 9: 3,250 yards par 35
No. 1: Kearney Hill's 3rd hole (497-yard par 5) — Water guards right side of green, sand on left. Risk/reward.
No. 2: Tates Creek's 10th hole (378-yard par 4) — Uphill, dogleg left that plays long. Green hidden behind bunker.
No. 3: Picadome's 4th hole (129-yard par 3) — Shortest par 3 on the four courses. Sloping green surrounded by deep bunkers.
No. 4: Lakeside's 18th hole (350-yard par 4) — Short dogleg left requires position tee shot. Water guards three sides of hard-to-hold green.
No. 5: Kearney's 17th hole (433-yard par 4) — Lake runs along right side of the fairway and green.
No. 6: Tates Creek's 14th hole (190-yard par 3) — Downhill shot to sloping green. Difficult to get up and down.
No. 7: Picadome's 9th hole (422-yard par 4) — Dogleg right, narrow fairway, with difficult second shot to small, severely sloping green.
No. 8: Kearney's 12th hole (198-yard par 3) — Downhill tee shot to kidney-shaped green guarded in front by water and sand.
No. 9: Lakeside's 9th hole (653-yard par 5) — Brutally long hole made even tougher by rolling terrain.
Back 9: 3,728 yards, par 37
No. 10: Picadome's 3rd hole (539-yard par 5) — Downhill tee shot must avoid creek short and right. Uphill second shot with trees left and right.
No. 11: Lakeside's 11th hole (445-yard par 4) — Straight, long par 4 with out-of-bounds left. Second shot to a narrow green, bunkers right.
No. 12: Kearney's 13th hole (468-yard par 4) — Dogleg right. Tee ball must avoid bunkers right and trees, steep drop-off left. Large, undulating green with bunkers.
No. 13: Tates Creek's 9th hole (379-yard par 4) — Straightaway hole. Trees left, out-of-bounds right. Bunkers in front of green, out-of-bounds behind green.
No. 14: Kearney's 14th hole (545-yard par 5) — Downhill tee shot has trouble right. Deep pit bunker in front of elevated, hard-to-hold green.
No. 15: Lakeside's 6th hole (177-yard par 3) — Straight-ahead hole, with very difficult sloping green.
No. 16: Picadome's 14th hole (440-yard par 4) — Blind tee shot, sloping fairway. Approach over creek to two-tier green. Bunkers left and right.
No. 17: Kearney's 8th hole (210-yard par 3) — Difficult tee shot to elevated green fronted by deep ravine bunker.
No. 18: Tates Creek's 13th hole (525-yard par 5) — Narrow landing area for tee ball. Blind, uphill second shot. Out of bounds left.
