How has Coal Miner's Daughter echoed in pop culture since it was released in 1980?
■ Loretta Lynn was in the audience at the 1981 Academy Awards ceremony to see Sissy Spacek win the Oscar for playing her. Also that year, boxer Jake LaMotta was in the audience to see Robert De Niro win the best actor award for playing him in Raging Bull.
■ Lynn has remained an active performer and recording artist since Coal Miner's Daughter. One of her biggest successes was 2004's Van Lear Rose, made with one of rock's coolest cats, producer and guitarist Jack White. That created an unforgettable Grammy Awards moment when it won best country album and Lynn directed White through the acceptance speech.
■ Coal Miner's Daughter is joining the ranks of movies that have made the leap to Broadway. Last year, Lynn introduced singer and New Girl star Zooey Deschanel as the actress who will play her on stage.
■ We have to step back to share this echo from last week's '80s film fest entry, The Goonies: The same night the film showed at The Kentucky, Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki was on TBS's Conan, telling host Conan O'Brien that The Goonies was one of his favorite movies. The film was partially shot in the studio where Conan is now produced. At Galecki's request, he and O'Brien re-created the scene where Chunk tells Sloth he's going to live with him.
