Known for: First Vineyard, the site of the first commercial winery and vineyard in the U.S. Jean-Jacques Dufour's original terraces were reestablished in 2007 and a new tasting room opened August 2012.
Brief history: Originally the southern portion of Fayette County, Jessamine County was formed in 1798 and is said to be named after the Jasmine flower.
Its is home to the historic High Bridge built in 1876, was once the highest trestle in the world.
Don't miss: Camp Nelson Civil War Days, a historic recreation featuring artillery drills, cannon firing, and barrack replicas. This year the reenactment will take place Sept. 7-8.
