Injuries and inexperience have plagued Lafayette this season, so it's hard to blame the Lady Generals for wanting to celebrate a big win.
Monday's 4-0 victory over visiting Bryan Station was just the third this season for the Generals. Their four goals were twice what they've scored in a single game so far.
"It's extremely amazing to win a game, as simple as it sounds," senior Kelly Hieronymus said.
The Generals, who had scored only eight goals all season before their four-goal burst Monday night, halted a five-game losing streak.
"Their confidence isn't where it should be and we needed a win like this to give us some confidence," first-year coach Laura Oppegard said.
Haley Willis, a freshman who normally plays defender but was moved up because of injuries, got Lafayette off to a fast start.
She took a feed from Hieronymus and popped it into the goal just a minute into the game.
"It's always fun to get a goal," she said of her first on varsity this season.
It was so much fun, she struck again with 12 minutes remaining in the first half, taking a shot from deep right and angling it into the goal to give the Generals a 2-0 lead.
In the first half, Lafayette outshot the winless Defenders 7-0 and 14-0 for the game.
Julia Pergande kept the Generals' march going in the second half. The sophomore outraced a line of defenders to find the back of the goal with 24 minutes to play.
Lily Sword had a similar goal 13 minutes later to make it 4-0 Lafayette.
"I was really proud of how they played tonight," Oppegard said. "It feels good to beat a team 4-0 when we've been beaten like that a lot."
The win was a nice reward for a team that doesn't always reap the benefits of its work.
"We really push ourselves and we always get frustrated by not winning, but we keep trying to push ourselves to do better," Willis said.
The Generals hope they can build on it.
"Even though we have very few wins, a win like this is going to help boost our morale for future seasons," Hieronymus said.
