It's almost as if the tournament-makers at Lexington Catholic had a top 25 crystal ball when they put together the Republic Bank Holiday Classic schedule earlier this year.
Of the 30 teams in the tournament, which starts Friday at Catholic, 15 were rated among the top 25 in the state by the coaches in the pre-season (two of them are out-of -state teams).
Seven teams are rated in the state's top 10, including No. 1 Marion County, No. 2 Manual, No. 3 Louisville Christian, No. 4 Sacred Heart, No. 6 Mercy, No. 7 Bowling Green and No. 9 Elizabethtown.
One of the more intriguing first-round matchups is the battle of potential Miss Basketballs between Antonita Slaughter of Louisville Christian and Samantha Drake of Nelson County.
Slaughter has signed with Louisville, and Drake has opted to sign in April, likely with Michigan State. Drake initially committed to Kentucky. Both players are rated in the nation's top 100 by several recruiting services.
Games will run simultaneously in two gyms on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with the championship game at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
