It never seems to fail.
Nearly every season, the two top-rated teams in the state seem to meet in the first round of the Houchens Industries' Girls Sweet Sixteen.
It happened again this season when the draw was announced Friday.
In just the second game of the tournament, which runs March 10-14 in Bowling Green, the winner of the 7th Region will take on the winner of the 5th Region, the top two teams according to Dave Cantrall's Rating the State.
That easily could be No. 1 Manual versus No. 2 Marion County in the first round.
But just getting to Diddle Arena could be a big hurdle for both of them.
Manual's 7th Region also has four other teams ranked in the top 25 including No. 4 Mercy, No. 13 Louisville Christian, No. 18 Sacred Heart and No. 22 Assumption.
To get to its first Sweet Sixteen since 1995, Marion County might have to contend with No. 6 Elizabethtown, which has gone to the tournament the past two seasons.
The winner will meet the winner of the game between the 6th Region, which has produced the past two state champions, and the 2nd Region, where Henderson County is a clear favorite to advance to its sixth straight Sweet Sixteen.
There is no clear favorite to come out of the 11th Region, but being in the lower part of the bracket might give that team a less treacherous road.
The champion will take on the 15th Region winner in the first round on Thursday. Sheldon Clark is considered a clear favorite in that region.
There are six teams from the 11th Region in the state's top 25, but none in the top 10, which could make it an interesting region tournament at Richmond.
Cantrall's ratings say there is less than a seven-point differential between the top team in the region, No. 11 Paul Laurence Dunbar, and the seventh team in the region, Lexington Christian.
Other ranked teams in the 11th Region are No. 12 Madison Central, No. 14 Franklin County, No. 16 Bryan Station, No. 21 Lexington Catholic and No. 25 Scott County.
The winner of the game between the 11th and 15th regions will probably meet a top-10 team in the quarterfinals (game between the 9th Region and the 4th Region).
Favorites in the 9th include No. 7 Newport Central Catholic, No. 9 Boone County and No. 20 Ryle. In the 4th, it's No. 3 Bowling Green and Franklin-Simpson.
