After posting a three-game sweep last weekend at the Caravelle Resort Invitational in South Carolina, Kentucky's baseball team will open its home portion of the schedule against two-time defending Mid-American Conference Champion Bowling Green. The three-game series is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Friday at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The teams also play Saturday and Sunday. Those games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
The strong start for the Wildcats included wins against Virginia Tech, West Virginia and No. 12 Coastal Carolina. As a result, UK entered the Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll at No. 29. Kentucky is also receiving votes in the Baseball America poll.
Bowling Green won the MAC and finished eighth in the NCAA in batting average (.345) in 2009. However, the Falcons (0-3) are off to a slow start this season after getting swept by No. 12 Louisville.
Bowling Green's roster includes last year's MAC Pitcher of the Year, Brennan Smith. Smith, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-hander, has a fastball that can reach 94 mph and an above-average split-finger.
Offensively, the Falcons are led by third baseman Derek Spencer (.385, 15 home runs and 59 RBI in 2009), who leads a strong infield that includes shortstop Jon Berti (.368, 5 HR, 34 RBI), second baseman Logan Meisler (.361, 4 HR, 45 RBI) and first baseman Dennis Vaughn (.336, 3 HR, 14 RBI).
