Zach Byrd's statistics are not jaw dropping.
The Paul Laurence Dunbar senior midfielder only had four goals and six assists this season. But it's the little things he does on the field that make him so good, Coach Todd Bretz said.
It's those same little things he does that helped him earn the title Mr. Soccer on Thursday, as it was announced by the state coaches' association.
"He's kind of like our quarterback on the field," Bretz said of Byrd, who has committed to Evansville. "We looked for him to control the whole pace of the game. Everything went through him."
Dunbar has only been in existence since the early 1990s, but it's had its share of soccer talent, including Mr. Soccers Sean Kelley and Brian O'Leary.
Tom Morgan, coach at East Jessamine, was an All-American at Dunbar and likely would have been a Mr. Soccer if the award had been handed out then, Bretz said.
The coach has won three state titles in his time with the Bulldogs, who finished this season 19-3-3 and fell to Henry Clay in the elite eight.
"We're fortunate that we get good players," Bretz said. "We play a good schedule so they get a lot of experience and hopefully through that they tend to grow as players."
Joining Byrd on First Team All-State was teammate Bennett Norris as well as other local standouts John Manga and Walker Euland of Henry Clay and Lexington Catholic's Ben Hall-Volpenhein.
