MOBILE, Ala. — Western Kentucky squandered its first-half lead as the Hilltoppers fell 31-24 to Sun Belt foe South Alabama.
Tyler Higbee opened scoring with a 16-yard catch from Brandon Doughty. Nicholas Norris reeled in passes of 5 and 20 yards to help push the Toppers (1-1) out to a 21-10 halftime lead.
But WKU didn’t score at all in the third quarter and allowed South Alabama to tie.
The Hilltoppers took the lead again early in the fourth on a 44-yard field goal by Garrett Schwettman, but the Jaguars answered with a field goal of their own just over two minutes later and would pull ahead for good with 1:38 left to play.

Doughty finished 27-of-47 for 282 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions for WKU. Senior running back Antonio Andrews had 15 carries for 122 yards.
