University of Kentucky commitment Karl Towns Jr. scored a team-high 16 points to help the Dominican national team defeat Paraguay 83-54 in the final game of pool play at the FIBA Americas tournament Tuesday.
The Dominican team — coached by UK assistant Orlando Antigua — will now advance to the tournament’s second stage, which begins Thursday.
Tuesday’s game was the first extended action that Towns has seen in the event. He picked up four fouls and didn’t score in five minutes on the court during Saturday’s win over Argentina. The 7-footer did not play in losses to Venezuela and Mexico on Sunday and Monday. He played 13-plus minutes against Paraguay. Towns was 5-for-6 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line while adding four rebounds.
The game was called with 4:23 remaining in the fourth quarter due to a power outage in the arena.
Towns and the Dominicans finished pool play 2-2 and will play at least four more games in the event, which is being played in Caracas, Venezuela. The championship game is set for Sept. 11.
Towns is UK’s only commitment for the Class of 2014.
