A few quick takes from Kentucky’s interview sessions after the first practice in full pads on Tuesday.
QB announcement coming soon: It seems unlikely that there will be any surprises when a Cats quarterback is announced (ahem, Patrick Towles). The biggest surprise probably will be when it actually gets announced. Coach Mark Stoops made it sound like it will be sooner rather than later. “We’re getting close. We’re getting close,” he said of the decision. “I think both guys are doing some real good things. It could be any day. It could be after the scrimmage (on Saturday).” Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson didn’t offer much more insight into the selection process, but did add: “It comes to a point where you gotta make a decision, right?”
Injury updates: Nothing has changed on the status of running back Stanley “Boom” Williams, who suffered a knee sprain in practice Monday, nor with wideout Jeff Badet, who bruised an ankle on the same day. “Both what we thought,” Stoops said. “We should be fine. I don’t know how many days it’ll be.” Offensive lineman Kyle Meadows, who missed Saturday’s practice with a migraine, is still being held out. “He dealt with that for a couple days pretty major, as far as migraines go, I guess, and he was actually in the hospital for a couple days with that,” Stoops said. “He’s out and he seems to be good. Whenever they tell me he can go, he’ll go.”
Depth chart movement: Tight ends coach Vince Marrow said that C.J. Conrad and Darryl Long are both playing well, but that Conrad is in front. Long has been playing well and is making a serious push, though. In a room full of wide receivers, it’s hard for players to separate themselves, but the one who seems to get talked about the most lately is Garrett Johnson. “I’m not going to talk about specific guys, but you know the playmakers we have,” Dawson said. “Juice (Johnson) is a good player. You can put that. I mean, Juice is a good player. He’s making plays every day." Another name that’s come up is junior Ryan Timmons (in both punt returns and as a slot receiver). “He’s been really consistent, I will say that,” Dawson said of Timmons. “Him and Juice have been extremely consistent at slot receiver, so been proud of those guys.”
