It was a day of news at the Kentucky football practice facility Monday morning. Here are your updates:
QB STARTER NAMED: Kentucky Coach Mark Stoops made it official and named quarterback Patrick Towles the starter for UK’s Sept. 5 opener versus Louisiana-Lafayette. The experience of being a 12-game starter last season was a deciding factor, but Stoops seemed pleased with how Towles looked after Saturday’s scrimmage as well. “He’s just more comfortable,” the head coach said. “He’s making good decisions. He’s making very quick decisions where to go with the ball, and then he’s delivering it on time. He’s throwing it. He’s got a lot of arm talent, so he’s really doing some good things.”
INJURY UPDATES: Running back Stanley “Boom” Williams, who suffered a knee sprain in practice a week ago, is running and conditioning with Stoops saying “he’s very close” to returning. Linebacker Ryan Flannigan is still out with an injured right shoulder, which is “taking a little bit of time,” Stoops said. Promising true freshman linebacker Jordan Jones will miss a couple of weeks with what is being described as an illness. Wideout Jeff Badet injured his foot in the scrimmage, but should be fine.
DISMISSAL: Kentucky’s coach dismissed offensive lineman Marcelys Jones, an Ohio State transfer, from the team for a “violation of team rules and he will no longer be with us.”
Never miss a local story.
DEPTH CHART: True freshman cornerback Chris Westry is running with the No. 1 defense right now, Stoops said. But it’s a fluid situation. He had an interception and a couple of pass breakups recently. “He’s got a long ways to go,” the coach noted. But he’s got some ability and he’s got that size. He’s 6-4, so he does more by accident sometimes.” At the other cornerback spot is Cody Quinn, a longtime starter at that spot. Outside linebackers coach Andy Buh said it's Denzil Ware and Jabari Johnson at outside linebackers. Behind them is Kengera Daniel and Josh Allen. “Those are the four we’re really focused on,” Buh said. “Then we’re bringing Alvonte Bell along.”
