The University of Kentucky women's soccer team held off Southeast Missouri State 1-0 on Sunday in the final game of the Tropical Smoothie Invitational in Lexington.
Natalie Horner's goal off a corner kick in the 54th minute lifted Kentucky to 4-0 this season for third-year coach Jon Lipsitz.
"One of the things we've been working on is how long we can possess the ball," Lipsitz said. "I thought in the first half, a lot of the time, their backs were really dominating our forwards physically. Well done by them and their coaching staff in scouting our forwards and how we're going to play. I thought we were a little tougher up top in the second half, made some adjustments, and tried to isolate a little more one vs. one. I thought that made a big difference for us."
Horner struck for the game's only goal in the 54th minute. Fellow senior Alyssa Telang placed her corner kick perfectly in the box where Horner rose up above the rest of the defense and headed the ball in to the far post. The goal was Horner's second off a corner kick in as many games and also the second goal of the season for the Upper Arlington, Ohio, native.
Kentucky has allowed only one goal this season, having posted three shutouts.
Keepers Kayla King and Kayla Price combined to post Sunday's shutout.
UK finished with 17 shots to SEMO's four while also taking 11 corner kicks. Kentucky has earned 41 corner kicks through four games while conceding two.
Southeast Missouri fell to 1-4-1.
Kentucky and Louisville both finished the Tropical Smoothie Invitational with 2-0 records, and both teams are 4-0 on the season.
