Kentucky's baseball team got two runs in the bottom of the seventh and strong relief on the mound from freshman Trevor Gott and senior Mike Kaczmarek in a series-clinching 3-1 win over Illinois-Chicago on Sunday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
Sophomore starter Jordan Cooper battled through 51⁄3 innings, allowing eight hits but only one run before giving way to Gott.
Gott, a freshman standout from Tates Creek, pitched 21⁄3 shutout innings for his first career win. He came on in the sixth with one out and runners on first and second. His first pitch induced an inning-ending double play. Gott then pitched the seventh and got two outs in the eighth before giving way to Kacmarek.
Another freshman, Frankfort native J.T. Riddle, led off the deciding seventh inning with a walk and moved on to second on a wild pitch.

Brian Adams then got hit by a pitch and Matt Reida drew a walk to load the bases. Then Taylor Black got hit by a pitch to force in the game-winning run. Adams scored later on a balk.
Chad Wright accounted for UK's lone RBI with a first-inning RBI single.
Softball rallies for win
The 24th-ranked Kentucky softball team needed some late heroics to top North Dakota State 5-4 in extra innings Sunday in the Stanford Nike Invitational in California.
With UK (11-3) down two and down to its final out, junior Brittany Cervantes knocked in two runs to send the game to extra innings. The Cats won on a suicide-squeeze bunt by freshman Lauren Cumbess.
Florida men, LSU women win SEC indoor titles
Top-ranked Florida won its first SEC Indoor Track and Field title since 2004, outlasting No. 5 Arkansas on Sunday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
The second-ranked Louisiana State women ran away with the women's title after strong performances in 200 meters and 60 hurdles.
UK's women finished eighth and the men were ninth.
UK's best performance Sunday came from junior Keith Hayes, who finished second in the men's 60-meter hurdles in 7.78 seconds.
Senior Mary Angell was third in the shotput.
Gymnastics 3rd at Masters
The gymnastics team finished third at the Masters Classic in Lincoln, Neb. UK scored 194.65 and defeated Bowling Green (189.45) while losing to Nebraska (196.5) and Iowa (195.5). UK seniors Andrea Mitchell and Phylicia Reshard were second and third in the all-around competition.
Women's golf trails early
Kentucky sophomore Ashleigh Albrecht's shot a 3-over 75 in the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship at the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans.
The Cats are 17-over as a team and are in 15th place. All 17 teams in the field are ranked in the top 50; 12 are in the top 25.
Rifle team second at GARC
Kentucky's rifle team finished second to West Virginia at the Great American Rifle Conference Championships, in Oxford, Miss.
