University of Kentucky athletes, including John Calipari's men's basketball team, excelled in the classroom on a historic level during the just-completed spring semester, the school announced Tuesday.
The team grade-point average of 3.39 among scholarship athletes in men's basketball was better than any semester GPA since at least 2002. During that span, there had been only four other GPAs in men's basketball higher than 3.0 — 3.11 in the spring semesters of 2011 and 2012, plus a 3.09 in the fall of 2006.
Overall, Kentucky's scholarship athletes posted a grade-point average of 3.14. That marked the highest cumulative GPA during Mitch Barnhart's time as athletics director. UK hired him in the summer of 2002.
In a news release, UK noted that the overall GPA for the fall semester of 2012 was 3.03.
"When I established the goal of a 3.0 overall GPA for our department, I knew I was setting the bar high," Barnhart said in a UK statement. "To reach it for an entire athletic year for the first time is an accomplishment our student-athletes should be very proud of. I commend and thank them for their hard work."
Sixteen of UK's 20 teams had a GPA of 3.0 or better. Calipari's team had the highest GPA among men's teams at UK.
In a tweet, Calipari noted that 12 of his 13 players had a GPA of 3.0 or better. Two players had a 4.0.
"I'm proud of the hard work our guys have put in both on and off the court," he said in a tweet.
The top five GPAs were posted by women's teams — 3.69 by women's tennis, 3.62 in women's soccer, 3.60 in women's swimming and diving, 3.59 in women's cross country and 3.53 in women's golf.
The only GPAs less than 3.0 were by men's track and field (2.84), men's cross country (2.79), football (2.71) and women's basketball (2.65).
Forty-seven of UK's scholarship athletes earned a 4.0 in the spring semester. In addition, 39 percent of scholarship athletes had GPAs of 3.5 or better and 70 percent were at 3.0 or better, the school reported.
"I am continually impressed by the way our student-athletes, coaches and staff embrace academics as an important part of our mission," Barnhart said in the statement. "We are identified first by what we do in competition, but we are out to prove an athletic department can excel in all facets."
