In a game of can-you-top-this, Kentucky finally subdued Xavier 9-6 with a three-run rally in the sixth inning Wednesday evening at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
UK (18-7) used seven pitchers, with Kyle Cody getting the win and Spencer Jack the save. Xavier fell to 12-11.
Kentucky jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, and the Musketeers answered with three of their own in the second. After UK rallied to take a 6-3 lead with three runs in the fourth, Xavier fought back with a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.
UK, the NCAA leader in runs scored for the third consecutive week, got its nine runs on eight hits. Sophomore outfielder Dorian Hairston went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
In the pivotal sixth, UK's Matt Reida was hit by a one-out, full-count pitch and JaVon Shelby doubled down the left-field line. Max Kuhn rifled a two-out grounder through the legs of the third baseman Stephen Schoettmer, allowing Reida and Shelby to score. A.J. Reed then brought home Kuhn with a single up the middle.
UK starter Ryne Combs worked two innings, allowing four hits and three runs.
