It took a few games for former University of Kentucky star A.J. Reed, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and the winner of several national player-of-the-year awards, to settle in against minor-league pitching. He broke through Saturday afternoon with three singles and two walks in six plate appearances in short-season Class A Tri-City's 11-0 victory at Lowell.
Reed, a second-round pick by the Houston Astros, singled in two runs in the ninth inning to give him three RBI in six games. He boosted his batting average to .286 and his on-base percentage to .464. He has six hits and six walks, plus he's also been hit by a pitch, in 28 plate appearances.
■ Former Kentucky standout Matt Reida went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, a walk and a run scored in his debut for the Tampa Bay Rays' rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate.
■ J.T. Riddle (Western Hills, UK) went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and three RBI in Class A Greensboro's 8-4 win against Hagerstown. The Miami Marlins prospect has 23 RBI in 43 games.
■ Minnesota Twins prospect Lance Ray (UK) had an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to score another run in Class A Advanced Fort Myers' 3-0 win at St. Lucie. Ray, an outfielder, is batting .280. In the other game of a doubleheader, St. Lucie starter Matthew Koch (U of L) pitched 52⁄3 scoreless innings in a 2-0 win to improve to 7-2 with a 3.33 ERA in 12 starts for the New York Mets affiliate.
■ Former Lafayette star Chaz Roe, a Marlins prospect at Triple-A New Orleans, pitched two scoreless innings and earned his ninth save in a 4-1 win against Sacramento.
■ Justin Amlung (St. Xavier, U of L) got the win for Class A Advanced Daytona (Cubs) when he pitched five innings and gave up two runs in an 11-4 win against Tampa.
■ The host Delmarva Shorebirds scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning and went on to defeat the Class A Lexington Legends 2-1. Frank Schwindel hit his 11th home run of the season for the Legends.
