Former University of Kentucky star Chris Rusin pitched six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, and also hit the first home run of his career in the Triple-A Iowa Cubs’ 16-3 rout of Colorado Springs on Friday night.
Rusin, a Chicago Cubs prospect who also singled to help his cause and is batting .375 (9-for-24), improved to 5-10 with a 4.16 ERA in 15 starts. He made his major-league debut earlier this season and gave up one run in five innings of a no-decision.
Chandler Shepherd (Lawrence County, UK) pitched two shutout innings and was in line for the victory before Vermont rallied to defeat short-season Class A Lowell 8-7 in 11 innings.
Shepherd, who hasn’t given up a run in either of his appearances for the Boston Red Sox affiliate, has three strikeouts in three innings.
Matt Reida (UK) was 2-for-4 with a two-run single in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Rays’ 9-0 victory against the Orioles.
Adam Engel (U of L) went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and a solo home run, and the rookie-level Arizona League White Sox defeated the Dodgers 8-5. Engel is batting .379 in seven games with the club.
Austin Cousino (UK) was 1-for-5 and scored a run in short-season Class A Everett’s 10-4 loss to Spokane. Cousino, a centerfielder in the Seattle Mariners’ organization, stole two bases to give him six in 12 games. He’s batting .306.
Tony Zych (U of L) pitched two shutout innings of relief and got the win in Double-A Tennessee’s 6-5 victory against Jackson. The Cubs prospect is 2-3 with a 3.72 ERA.
Patrick Brady (Henry Clay, Bellarmine) was 1-for-4 with two RBI in Class A Advanced High Desert’s 14-7 loss to Modesto. Brady, a Seattle Mariners prospect, is batting .281 with two home runs and 10 RBI for the Mavericks.
Max Kuhn (UK) had an RBI single, but the rookie-level Arizona League A’s lost 12-2 to the Diamondbacks.
Robbie Ross (Lexington Christian), who struggled in his first shot at being a starting pitcher in the majors with the Texas Rangers, is scheduled to make his second start for Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday. Ross pitched four shutout innings and gave up one hit in his first start for the Express.
