Former University of Kentucky standout Austin Cousino was 1-for-3 with a single, two walks, two stolen bases and an RBI in short-season Class A Everett’s 3-2 loss to Tri-City in Northwest League play on Saturday night.
Cousino, a third-round pick by the Seattle Mariners who is batting .259 with four RBI in 20 games for the AquaSox, reached double figures in stolen bases with his ninth and 10th of the season. He has only been caught once.
■ The Chicago Cubs trading two starters to Oakland prompted the team to promote Chris Rusin to the majors early in day Saturday. And it didn’t take long for them to call on the former UK star.
Rusin, who was 6-10 with a 3.96 ERA for Triple-A Iowa, came on in relief of Carlos Villanueva in the third inning against the Washington Nationals. But he couldn’t get the Cubs out of trouble.

Rusin gave up four runs — one belonging to Villanueva — before bouncing back with a pair of shutout innings in the fourth and fifth. However, he gave up two more runs in the sixth. Rusin’s final line: Five runs on nine hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
He only gave up one run in five innings in his other appearance for the Cubs earlier this season.
■ AJ Reed (UK) was 1-for-3 with a single, two walks and a run scored in short-season Class A Tri-City’s 9-4 win against Lowell in the New York-Penn League.
Reed, a second-round pick by the Houston Astros in June, is batting .233 with 11 RBI, but his 14 walks in 19 games help push his on-base percentage to .371.
■ Luke Maile (Covington Catholic, UK) had an RBI double in Double-A Montgomery’s 3-1 victory against Mississippi. Kes Carter (WKU) also had an RBI for the Biscuits, a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate.
■ Luke Shearrow (Lindsey Wilson) started and pitched four shutout innings but did not factor in the decision in the rookie-level Arizona League White Sox’s 3-1 loss to the Giants. He allowed one hit and walked two while striking out five.
Shearrow has pitched nine innings in three appearances, allowing two earned runs with 10 strikeouts.
■ Mike Fiers (Cumberlands) gave up four runs — two unearned — in seven innings of Triple-A Nashville’s 4-3 defeat at Round Rock.
Fiers, 6-4 with a 2.63 ERA, had eight strikeouts without a walk. For the season, the Milwaukee Brewers prospect has 103 strikeouts and 11 walks in 78 2/3 innings.
■ Derek Self (Caverna, U of L) didn’t allow a run or hit in two innings of relief in Double-A Harrisburg’s 7-4 loss to Altoona. Self, a Washington Nationals prospect, is 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA in eight games for the Senators.
■ Chad Wright (Heath, UK) was 1-for-5 with an RBI in Class A Advanced Lakeland’s 4-2 loss to Daytona. Wright is batting. 279 with three homers and 28 RBI in 76 games for the Detroit Tigers affiliate.
■ Terrence Dayleg (WKU) was 3-for-5 with a solo home run in Double-A Jacksonville’s 3-2 victory against Chattanooga. Dayleg is batting .302 for the Miami Marlins affiliate.
■ Josh Richmond (U of L) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Chris Curley (Beechwood, Campbellsville) was 3-for-4 with one RBI in Double-A Birmingham’s 13-3 win over Tennessee. The Chicago White Sox minor-leaguers scored two runs apiece.
■ Andrew Edwards (Marshall County, WKU) gave up four runs in 3 2/3 innings of the Class A Lexington Legends’ 9-2 loss at Asheville. The Kansas City Royals prospect is 2-4 with a 4.68 ERA.
■ Zack Cox (PRP) had a sacrifice fly for an RBI in Triple-A New Orleans’ 6-3 loss to Memphis. The Miami Marlins prospect is batting .271 with five homers and 19 RBI in 61 games.
■ Class A South Bend ended Dace Kime’s four-game winning streak by scoring four runs — two unearned — in five innings on the former University of Louisville star. Kime’s Lake County Captains lost 8-7. Kime, 4-10 with a 4.89 ERA for the Cleveland Indians affiliate, opened the season with nine straight losses before his win streak.
