Billy Gillispie could write a book about his experiences as a college basketball coach.
And so he will.
The former University of Kentucky coach is teaming up with Steve Richardson, a free-lance writer from Dallas, to author a book titled The Billy Gillispie Story, which will detail the coach's life and career in coaching.
The deal was announced Wednesday in a news release from Richardson Enterprises.
Gillispie and the author have been working on the book on and off for the past three years but now have formally agreed to see the book through to completion.
"I am just really excited about what we have done so far," Gillispie said. "And I look forward to continuing on this project. It has been a lot of fun so far, and I am sure it will be a lot of fun to complete. I have more time to do it now."
UK fired Gillispie in March after two seasons as head coach but his connection to the school lives on in the form of a federal lawsuit Gillispie filed against UK's athletics association concerning the amount of the buyout he expects to receive.
Richardson said the publisher of the book will be disclosed later.
"I first approached Billy three years ago at the Final Four in Indianapolis, and we have been conversing ever since," Richardson said. "I fully expect it to be ready by the time Billy lands his next job and is coaching again. Where or when that will be, I don't know. But I expect him to be at another school in another year."
Gillispie coached at Texas-El Paso and Texas A&M before arriving at Kentucky in 2007.
