The exhibition game between former University of Kentucky basketball players and the Dominican Republic National Team has been finalized, but not quite in the form as originally expected.
A group of eight former UK players now in the NBA will play a Dominican team coached by current UK coach John Calipari at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Rupp Arena.
But former UK coach Joe B. Hall and former UK star Sam Bowie will not be coaching the team of former UK players, as was tweeted by Calipari on Wednesday night.
"The University of Kentucky cannot have any affiliation with the event, therefore no former players or coaches will be honorary coaches," said UK Associate Athletics Director DeWayne Peevy, acting on behalf of game promoter ProCamps.
Earlier Thursday at the Governor's Cup football luncheon, Hall had talked about how much fun it was going to be coaching the roster of former players. "I've got (Rajon) Rondo and (John) Wall," he said.
Besides Rondo and Wall, former UK players DeMarcus Cousins, Tayshaun Prince, Eric Bledsoe, Keith Bogans, Jodie Meeks and Nazr Mohammad will also play, according to Calipari.
The Dominican Republic National Team is scheduled to include current NBA players Francisco Garcia, Al Horford and Charlie Villanueva.
Because the game cannot be affiliated with UK, plans to honor former UK coaches and teams were scrapped by ProCamps, which according to its Web site develops, manages and operates sports camps and related events for NBA athletes.
A pre-sale of tickets will start Friday at 10 a.m. (To be eligible for the pre-sale, you must join Rupp Arena's "First-in-Line Club" on its Web site.) Tickets for the general public will be available through Ticketmaster on Monday. Ticket prices range from $15 for upper-level seats to $35 for lower-level seats, to $100 and $1,200 for seats closest to the floor.
