The Living Arts and Science Center plans to auction a collection of University of Kentucky basketball mementoes, including a ball from Coach Joe B. Hall that is signed by Sam Bowie, Dan Issel, Cotton Nash and 15 other players.
Other collectibles being sold in the fund-raising effort include a rare bottle of Maker's Mark sealed to celebrate UK's 1996 NCAA Championship, a printing plate of the Lexington Herald-Leader's reprint celebrating UK's 1998 NCAA championship, and a ball signed by UK Coach John Calipari.
The items will go up on eBay on Saturday evening. The auction will end April 3.
LASC director Heather Lyons said the items had been collected over the years, and "this year, we thought there'd be a lot of excitement around the Final Four."
Never miss a local story.
The auction is separate from an ongoing $5 million capital campaign to raise money to renovate and expand the center's building at 362 North Martin Luther King Boulevard. The center is a non-profit that offers classes and other programs in arts and sciences.
LASC also is auctioning an item not related basketball: a halter worn by famed filly Zenyatta. The halter was donated by Zenyatta's owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, and Lane's End Farm, where Zenyatta resides and recently foaled a colt sired by Preakness winner Bernardini.
The halter is being auctioned on a different Web site. To bid on the halter between March 24 and April 3, go to www.biddingforgood.com/auction/AuctionHome.action?auctionId=156290440.
