Less than a week after it went live, more than 4,300 people have taken an online survey to tell city officials what they want inside a newly designed Rupp Arena, city officials said Monday.
Fans who take the survey before 8 a.m. Wednesday could win free tickets to Wednesday night's Mississippi State-Kentucky men's basketball game, Mayor Jim Gray announced Monday. Winners will be notified by 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Anyone who already has taken the survey and has entered a valid email address has been entered into the contest, city officials said.
City officials and architects for the project will be at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday before the game to gather more input from those who attend games and other events at Rupp.
Never miss a local story.
Architects and city officials will be online from 6 to 8 p.m. to answer questions submitted through social media — Facebook.com/RuppDistrict or Twitter @RuppDistrict or by email at email@example.com.
Gray said city officials hope a reinvented Rupp Arena can reinvigorate downtown. They want as much input as possible, he said.
"The project to reinvent Rupp Arena is a game-changer for Lexington, so it's important that we hear from as many people as possible about what kinds of changes they'd like to see," Gray said.
Seattle-based architectural firm NBBJ was picked in July to design the Rupp Arena renovation and the new Lexington Convention Center. Hunt Construction of Indianapolis was tapped as general contractor.
NBBJ and Hunt Construction have previous experience building arenas. NBBJ designed the $136 million renovation of UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. It also worked on the Los Angeles Lakers' Staples Center, the Seattle Mariners' Safeco Field and Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati.
Hunt built Rupp Arena in 1976 and has built the Orlando Magic's Amway Center, the Charlotte Bobcats' Time Warner Cable Arena, the Indianapolis Colts' Lucas Oil Stadium and the St. Louis Cardinals' Busch Stadium.
