University of Kentucky basketball culture can get a little crazy sometimes — something that was not lost on David Bay during his stint with the UK marching band from 1981-85. When the Alumni Pep Band came along, Bay found a new way to support the Wildcats. And now he's taking it to another level by decorating his mellophone with 60 LED lights and graphics honoring Wildcats basketball history. It's powered by eight AA batteries. Bay calls the instrument "The Kentucky Effect."
Bay is from Pendleton, and his sons are carrying on the family tradition — Morgan, a freshman at UK, is a trumpet player; Spencer, a senior at Pendleton County High School, plays French horn; and Robert, a seventh grader, is just staring to play French horn.
The Alumni Pep Band plays a handful of times yearly, filling in for the regular pep band at men's and women's basketball games held between the fall and spring semesters.
