One fan in Colonial Life Arena on Saturday got embroiled in what could be called "Shirt-gate."
A controversy erupted before the Kentucky-South Carolina game when the South Carolina student section began chanting "Kick-her-out." They didn't like the presence of a student wearing a Kentucky blue shirt.
The offender was Hollee Hughes, a sophomore from Lexington who attends South Carolina.
When an usher arrived and began talking to Hughes, the South Carolina students resumed the "Kick-her-out" chant.
Never miss a local story.
The usher insisted that Hughes put on South Carolina colors, she said. A Gamecocks jersey appeared, which the usher offered Hughes.
Hughes declined the offer. The usher told her she could be jeopardizing her chance at a ticket for future South Carolina games.
Hughes again declined.
Eventually, Hughes and the usher reached a Solomon-like compromise. She agreed to put her gray jacket (temperatures were in the 30s outside the arena) over her blue shirt.
After an usher departed and a reporter arrived to ask about the color controversy, Hughes smiled and whispered, "I'm taking it off later."
