Alltech will present University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari with its Humanitarian Award during a conference later this month.
Alltech, the Nicholasville-based animal nutrition company founded by Pearse Lyons, presents its Humanitarian Award annually to "someone of strong character, who uses their accomplishments to positively influence and inspire other people."
Previous honorees include Lopez Lomong, a Lost Boy of Sudan who became a two-time Olympic athlete and founder of the Lopez Lomong Foundation, and Ronan Tynan, a Paralympic athlete, physician and singer noted for being one of the Irish Tenors.
Alltech explained its reasoning for choosing the UK basketball coach by describing Calipari as someone who "has leveraged his power of influence for charitable endeavors, while inspiring countless other people to join him in his good works."
Never miss a local story.
Calipari will receive the award during Alltech's REBELation, a conference exploring innovation, inspiration and world-changing ideas in Lexington from May 17-20.
On May 20, Calipari is scheduled to share his insights with the conference's international attendees on team building and leadership.
In addition to Calipari's success on the basketball court — which includes leading UK to four Final Fours and a national title during his six seasons as coach — his Calipari Foundation has raised millions in funds to help those in need in Kentucky and across the U.S. In 2010, his telethon "Hoops for Haiti" raised more than $1 million for victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Another telethon organized by Calipari in 2012 raised $1 million for victims of Superstorm Sandy. The Calipari Foundation also has worked with and donated money to Samaritan's Feet, the West Liberty Recovery Fund, 4 Paws for Ability, the Starkey Hearing Foundation, the Urban League of Lexington and the V Foundation.
Calipari has also led the EverFi Financial Literacy program, which teaches students about money management. He is the author of the New York Times best-selling book "Players First: Coaching from the Inside Out" and also wrote "Bounce Back: Overcoming Setbacks to Succeed in Business and in Life."
