An NCAA basketball tournament appearance is good for a school's brand, and it's also good for the coaches' bottom lines.
The University of Kentucky will pay about $792,000 to its men's and women's basketball coaches after the postseason, in which the women made it to the NCAA Sweet 16 and the men got to the NCAA title game.
The men's coaches will collect $663,530, with the remaining $128,937 going to the women's coaches. UK men's Coach John Calipari gets $350,000. (Connecticut men's Coach Kevin Ollie will get a $167,000 bonus for winning the NCAA tournament, according to press reports.)
Losing the finals of the SEC and NCAA tournaments was costly for Calipari. If his team had won those games, he would have received $50,000 for the SEC title and $350,000 for the NCAA title.
Never miss a local story.
Still, a bigger bonus is coming this summer. Since 2012, Calipari has received a $1 million retention bonus each year on July 1. That contract clause continues through 2019. Calipari's base annual pay is $3.8 million, but with endorsement and broadcast deals, that figure tops $5 million.
Although men's coaches are eligible for multiple bonuses each year, the contracts of women's coaches limit them to one bonus for post-season play. For example, the women's coaches received a bonus equal to 1½ months' salary for making it to the Sweet 16.
Had the team made a Final Four appearance, each coach would have gotten a bonus worth two months' salary.
