UK student group helps with blanket donations
Student government at the University of Kentucky is partnering with a group called Wrap Up America to send blankets to those hit by Wednesday's devastating tornado in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
One blanket will be sent to Alabama for each $3 donation, organizers said Thursday.
UK Student Body President Ryan Smith said the effort was put together after UK students began seeing images of the damage.
Never miss a local story.
Tuscaloosa is home to the University of Alabama, which — like UK — is a member of the Southeastern Conference.
"This is an opportunity to help a member of our SEC family, and we're here to do what we can to make this time easier for some struggling to recover," Smith said.
Wrap Up America is a student-led volunteer organization with chapters at UK, the University of Louisville and five other universities. The nonprofit group, formed less a year ago, provides blankets for the homeless and underprivileged communities.
Anyone can donate.
