Freshman wide receiver Nile Daniel was not able to qualify academically and won't be playing for Kentucky this season, head coach Joker Phillips said after Thursday's light practice.
Daniel, a 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Griffin, Ga., had been awaiting approval from the NCAA clearinghouse.
"Nile did not make it; he did not qualify," Phillips said. "Nile was only a six-semester guy. ... He was trying to speed up the process and get out in six semesters. ... That was a really difficult thing to try to do. He went down to the wire with it. It just didn't work out."
Kentucky spokesman Tony Neely later clarified that Daniel returned to high school to complete his course work and that once he is eligible, he could join UK.
That could be in January or after the spring semester, but not until then.
