How Kentucky beat Samford: Quarter by quarter
Summary: QB Jalen Whitlow kept the opening drive alive with a 7-yard run on fourth-and-2, then finished it with an 11-yard TD strike to Gene McCaskill. Jonathan George started UK's second drive with a 23-yard burst up the middle and Whitlow finished it with a 20-yard TD run. UK kept the ball for almost 11 minutes and outgained Samford 157-43.
Thumbs up: Whitlow completed six of seven passes, plus ran for three first downs and a TD.
Never miss a local story.
Thumbs down: Sad to see so few fans in the stands for Senior Night.
Summary: After Samford cut the lead to 14-3, a 21-yard strike from Whitlow to McCaskill set up a 35-yard Craig McIntosh FG. Patrick Towles drove UK to the Samford 1, but George fumbled. Samford could not move the ball and UK had to go only 33 yards for its next TD. Raymond Sanders took it in from 14. Donte Rumph's sack caused a fumble that Tristian Johnson ran 25 yards for a score.
Thumbs up: Daryl Collins was dragging defenders on his 32-yard kickoff return.
Thumbs down: A punt return TD was called back.
Summary: Coach Joker Phillips put in some interesting wrinkles — 343-pound guard Larry Warford at fullback and quarterback Morgan Newton at receiver. A 27-yard Sanders run set up another McIntosh field goal. Towles came in for a brief appearance, but was intercepted. Sanders ended the quarter with a 31-yard run.
Thumbs up: Sanders gained 65 yards and went over 1,000 for his career.
Thumbs down: The quarter seemed to take longer than counting votes in Florida.
Summary: The most entertaining play of the night was a Whitlow lateral to 293-pound sophomore tackle Darrian Miller, who rumbled for a gain of 4. The best moment of the night came after the game, when the UK players lifted Phillips and carried him off the field.
Thumbs up: Make it 3-0 for Joker on Senior Night. A nice farewell.
Thumbs down: Too bad things didn't work out for Phillips, who was a class act to the end.
