Kentucky has found its next defensive backs coach in a familiar place: the Cincinnati coaching staff.
Steve Clinkscale, the co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach for the Bearcats, is expected to be named UK’s new secondary coach early this week.
Before this hire, UK Coach Mark Stoops also hired offensive coordinators Eddie Gran and Darin Hinshaw away from the Bearcats’ staff.
Clinkscale, whose hire has not been made official by the university yet and was first reported by 247Sports.com, has been at Cincinnati since 2013 and spent a season coaching the corners at Illinois prior to that.
Never miss a local story.
The Youngstown, Ohio, native (just like Stoops) spent three seasons at Toledo where he coached cornerbacks and special teams. Clinkscale also coached at Western Carolina for a season and spent seven seasons before that coaching at his alma mater, Division II Ashland University.
Under his most recent contract with the Bearcats, Clinkscale made $250,000. He replaces Derrick Ansley, who left to take the defensive backs coach at Alabama.
In his latest salary bump at Kentucky, Ansley was promoted to co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach and was going to make $375,000 this season. Ansley made $275,000 last season at UK.
This latest hire likely completes a whirlwind staff shakeup this offseason that included the firing of offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and wide receivers coach Tommy Mainord as well as the departures of running backs coach Chad Scott to North Carolina and Ansley to Alabama.
