University of Kentucky men's basketball Coach John Calipari offered a scholarship to five-star point guard Kobi Simmons on Monday night, the player's father told the Herald-Leader. The 6-foot-5 prospect from Alpharetta, Ga., is considered the No. 5 overall prospect in the class of 2016 by ESPN. Scout.com ranks him No. 8 overall. He already had offers from Kansas, North Carolina, Arizona and several others.
Simmons has been on UK's recruiting radar for more than a year. He visited Lexington for Big Blue Madness in 2013 and returned to town last November. Desmond Stephens, the player's father, told the Herald-Leader that the family plans to visit UK again this summer.
Wildcats assistant coach John Robic watched Simmons play on the Adidas circuit last weekend in Texas.
Findlay Prep (Nev.) standout Derryck Thornton is the only other point guard in the class of 2016 with an offer from Kentucky, although he is considering reclassifying to 2015. If Thornton does that, he'll choose Duke or Louisville.
