Duke point guard Tyus Jones announced Wednesday that he will move on to the NBA after one season with the Blue Devils.
That means Coach Mike Krzyzewski is looking for a new point guard, and his No. 1 target is one of John Calipari’s biggest recruiting priorities for the class of 2016.
Findlay Prep (Nev.) star Derryck Thornton will host Krzyzewski on Monday as he continues to consider reclassifying to 2015 so he can play college basketball next season. If Thornton does make the jump to 2015, he will choose either Duke or Louisville.
If Thornton stays in 2016, UK remains one of the top schools on his list. Lexington is an unrealistic landing spot for 2015 because the Cats already have Tyler Ulis and five-star prospect Isaiah Briscoe at the point guard position.
Until recently, Thornton was the only point guard from the class of 2016 with a scholarship offer from UK. Calipari extended an offer to Georgia standout Kobi Simmons on Monday, and he will be UK’s No. 1 priority at point guard if Thornton reclassifies. Even if Thornton stays put in the class of 2016, Simmons should be considered a top UK target.
Duke and Kentucky also are targeting Nike Hoop Summit MVP Jamal Murray, who is considering reclassifying to 2015. Neither school has offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-5 combo guard.
