Jamal Murray was not named to the team that will represent Canada at the FIBA Americas qualifying tournament for next year's Olympics, freeing him up to enroll at the University of Kentucky for the first day of classes next week.
Murray — a five-star combo guard — helped lead Canada to a silver medal in the Pan American Games earlier this month and worked out with the national team at its training camp this week.
He likely would have been one of the 13 players named to the Olympic qualifying team Thursday, but that would have jeopardized his eligibility to play for the Wildcats this season.
The qualifying tournament runs through Sept. 12 in Mexico, and UK's fall semester begins Wednesday. Murray could have missed several days of classes had he played with Team Canada.
