Five-star recruit Wenyen Gabriel signed a national letter of intent with the University of Kentucky on Wednesday, the first day of college basketball's early signing period.
Gabriel — a 6-foot-10 small forward from Manchester, N.H. — committed to the Wildcats on Oct. 1 and is currently the highest-rated player in UK's recruiting class of 2016. Scout.com ranks him as the nation's No. 10 senior.
The signing ceremony was held at Gabriel's high school — Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Massachusetts. Fellow UK commitments Sacha Killeya-Jones and Tai Wynyard are expected to officially sign with the Cats later this week.
Five-star point guard De'Aaron Fox is also expected to announce his commitment to Kentucky during ESPNU's recruiting special at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Gabriel was one of the breakout stars of the summer basketball circuit, going from unranked to top-10 status in the Scout.com rankings and earning scholarship offers from UK, Duke, Kansas and several others along the way.
"Wenyen Gabriel has a tremendous amount of upside," Scout.com's Evan Daniels told the Herald-Leader earlier this week. "He's clearly a late-bloomer. He's a guy that really emerged this summer. He grew physically, but his talent and his skill has also really developed. He's capable of taking rebounds and starting the break. He's a good passer with a very good feel for the game. He's also a really good athlete."
Gabriel, who is originally from what is now South Sudan, ultimately chose the Cats over Duke, Maryland, UConn and Providence.
Wilbraham & Monson Academy is scheduled to play five-star recruit Thon Maker and Athlete Institute (Ont.) in the Thoroughbred Classic at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington on Dec. 12.
