Kentucky will be represented by five different schools when the men's and women's NAIA basketball national tournaments tip off Wednesday.
Georgetown, Pikeville and St. Catharine will take part in the men's event at Kansas City, Mo. Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson will play in the women's tournament at Jackson, Tenn.
Coach Happy Osborne's Georgetown team represents the old guard. The Tigers will be making their record 20th straight appearance and record 30th overall.
Georgetown (29-4) is 10-0 all-time against its first-round opponent, Olivet Nazarene (21-11).
Four Tigers are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Mid-South Conference Player of the Year Vic Moses' 14.1 points per game. Tyrone Shelley averages 12.6, Eddie Gray and Maurice Pearson 10.7. Moses, a junior from Henry Clay, also leads the team in rebounding at 6.7 per game.
Georgetown, which won its only national championship in 1998, has been to the title game four times and the semifinals 11 times. The Tigers have been knocked out in the first round each of the past two years.
Olivet Nazarene has won 13 of its last 16 games.
The men's tournament opens with Pikeville (25-7) taking on defending national champion Oklahoma Baptist (24-8). The Bears are making their first appearance since 2004 and their sixth all-time.
Coach Kelly Wells' Pikeville squad leads NAIA Division I in scoring (90.7 points per game) and is also No. 1 in three-point shots made with 284. Senior guard Vance Cooksey leads the Bears with averages of 18.9 points and 4.8 assists.
St. Catharine (22-8) makes its first appearance in the tournament when it opens against Lindenwood (28-5) on Wednesday. Junior guard Kashiff Carr leads Coach J.T. Burton's Patriots, scoring 21.5 points a game.
Lindsey Wilson is the first of Kentucky's two women's teams to tip off, taking on Southern Nazarene of Oklahoma on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
Sophomore forward Ashley Rainey (20.9 ppg) and senior forward Viktoria Krell (17.9 ppg) lead Coach John B. Wethington's Blue Raiders (23-8).
Later Thursday, Campbellsville takes on John Brown of Arkansas. Coach Ginger Colvin's Tigers (28-3) enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the first time, making their 19th appearance.
Campbellsville is led by reigning NAIA Division I National Player of the Year, Whitney Ballinger, who leads the nation at 23.4 points per game and is third in blocks per game (3.19) and defensive rebounds per game (8.19).
Union (Tenn.) is the two-time defending women's champion.
