Uniformed and undercover officers will be patrolling near Rupp Arena to keep an eye out for ticket scalpers during this week's NCAA Tournament games.
In a news release Tuesday, police reminded residents of state and local laws governing ticket and merchandise sales.
It is illegal to sell tickets above face value anywhere in the state. A city ordinance bans people from selling any food or merchandise within a block radius of Rupp Arena and The Lexington Center on game days.
"We will be enforcing both of those laws," said Sherelle Roberts, spokeswoman for the Lexington Division of Police. Violators could face fines up to $250. The city ordinance also carries a potential penalty of up to seven days in jail.
The news release also reminded drivers to account for heavy traffic. Police asked visitors to use I-75 exits 115 (Newtown Pike) and 113 (North Broadway) to access downtown. Electronic signs and officers will help direct traffic to available parking spots.
Tens of thousands of visitors are expected downtown for tournament games Thursday and Saturday.
