University of Kentucky golfer Cooper Musselman, a sophomore out of St. Xavier, shot a 67 with six birdies and one bogey to earn medalist honors at the U.S. Open local qualifier at Bardstown Country Club at Maywood on Monday. Six players advanced to sectional qualifying in their bid to play in this year’s major at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
Tyler “Chip” McDaniel (Clay County, UK), Ashton Van Horne (Scott County, Belmont) and Ryan Botts of Lebanon, Tenn., all shot 68s. The last two spots went to Jesse Massie, the assistant professional at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville, and Eric Ansett of Spokane, Wash. Both carded 69s. Massie played in high school at Trinity and in college at Eastern Kentucky.
Jason Allred of Scottsdale, Ariz., and C.J. Jones of Frankfort — the 2015 Kentucky high school state champion — each shot a 70 to earn the pair of alternate spots. Allred won a playoff for first alternate.
