Eva Mitchell, who led West Jessamine to its first girls’ soccer championship last season, was named Gatorade Kentucky Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year on Monday.
Mitchell, who was named Miss Soccer and is enrolled at the University of Kentucky, is the second girls’ soccer player from West Jessamine to win the award. Arin Gilliand, who also played at UK, won the award in 2011.
West Jessamine defeated Lexington Catholic, 4-0, in the state finals. Mitchell scored 41 goals and had 14 assists for the Colts, who defeated five straight top-10 teams to end their season. She finished her high school career with 103 goals and 54 assists.
Kentucky’s high school boys’ and girls’ soccer seasons are both played in the fall. Many states alternate with one gender playing in the fall and the other in the spring, so Gatorade awards its Player of the Year honors in those sports in the summer.
Anna Lee, one of Mitchell’s teammates at West Jessamine, will also play at UK.
