HIKE! is your weekly guide to high school football. This weekend's kickoffs:
St. Xavier vs. Henry Clay at Lexington Catholic, 6:15 p.m.: It's the season opener for these 6A fixtures who have met only once before: a 26-0 St. X win in the 1995 state finals. Can UK commitment Davonte Robinson help Henry Clay even the ledger?
Never miss a local story.
Lexington Christian at Kentucky Country Day, 7:30: Both teams had no problem getting off to a good start in 2015. LCA had two sophomores throw for more than 130 yards in its shutout of Williamsburg; KCD had 14 different offensive players touch the ball in a 47-19 win over Atherton.
Madison Central at Paul Laurence Dunbar, 7:30 p.m: Zach Hardin needed just six completions to reach 223 passing yards for Madison Central in a win on Saturday. Dunbar must contain him and receiver Kody Kidd to avoid an 0-2 start.
Simon Kenton at Bryan Station, 7:30 p.m.: The first of three straight at home for the Defenders, who earned their first shutout of the Frank Parks era in a 49-0 win over Knox Central on Saturday. Simon Kenton pounded Class 2A contender Louisville Christian 50-23 last Friday.
Tates Creek at Belfry, 8:30 p.m.: Talk about a tough 1-2 for Tates Creek. The Commodores got trounced by Scott County and now travel to the mountains to take on the Pirates, who begin their season.
Ryle at Lexington Catholic, 8:45: The second game of the Bluegrass Bowl pits the Knights, who easily vanquished Boone County on the road, against Ryle, which scored a statement win over Covington Catholic. Ryle junior QB Tanner Morgan sports Division I offers from Louisville and Wake Forest.
TOP STATE GAMES
Male at Ballard, 7:30 p.m.: The Louisville powers clash in one of the early season's juiciest matchups. Neither team allowed a point in its season opener. Male will be without U of L commitment Keion Wakefield for the second straight game.
Paintsville at Frankfort, 7:30 p.m.: Western Kentucky commitment Anthony Robinson suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Frankfort's 21-12 loss to Paris. Its first chance to regroup is against UK-bound Kash Daniel and rejuvenated running back Kent Phelps.
Pulaski County vs. Scott County at Georgetown's Toyota Stadium, 7:30 p.m.: It's hard to declare a game of the year so early in the season, but this has the makings of one. The experienced Maroons come to Scott County after having scored the most points (64) of any team in week one. The Cardinals allowed the fewest rushing yards — minus 35 — in the first week.
Central Hardin at Paducah Tilghman, 7:30 CDT: The Bruins already had one 3A power hang an "L" on them, and Tilghman put one on McCracken County last week.
Lafayette vs. Mercer County at Boyle County, 6 p.m.: Mercer did not fare well against North Hardin, falling 55-20. If Lafayette is looking ahead to next week's much-anticipated bout with Trinity then this PBK Rebel Bowl opener might get hairy.
TOP STATE GAMES
Bell County at Boyle County, 8:40 p.m.: The second half of the PBK Rebel Bowl looks more enticing. In their openers, Boyle earned a close win over 6A contender Central Hardin and the Bobcats squashed rival Middlesboro.
Letcher County Central vs. Pikeville, 8:15 p.m.: The capper to the four Pike County Bowl games features two of the state's top running backs: scoring machine Daric Pugh for Pikeville and Jaylyn Williams of LCC, who scorched Pike County Central for 464 yards last week.
