For the second time in a week, Henry Clay edged Tates Creek 1-0 for a boys' soccer title.
Last Friday, Walker Ueland's goal gave the Blue Devils the 26th District crown at Bryan Station.
Thursday night, Ueland struck again to propel Henry Clay to the 13th Region title on its home field.
"Team effort, but lucky enough to finish again," said Ueland, who tallied with 19:31 left in the match. "Feels good, feels good. Region title. They knocked us out last year. It's great to get revenge."
Never miss a local story.
The yet-to-be-determined 16th Region winner will host the Blue Devils (15-6-1) Tuesday in sub-section play.
"I couldn't be more proud of the boys," said Brandon Turek, coach of the Commodores (9-7-2). "They fought to the final whistle and they definitely played together as tough and as strong as they could."
Henry Clay had the best looks in a scoreless first half.
Commodores goalie Reid Van Bussum stopped a bullet off the foot of John Manga 10 minutes in and, soon after, came out to stone Manga with a sliding save.
With just under 14 minutes left, Manga launched another rocket. The ball hit the crossbar, caromed straight down at the goal line and was gathered on the hop by Van Bussum.
"We were getting our chances," said Ueland, who was named tournament MVP. "I knew it was going to come."
It did, with just under 20 minutes left.
Ueland, in the center, slid the ball over to Manga on the right side and near the top of the penalty box. Manga couldn't break through, but Ueland was ready for the second chance.
"The ball deflected at the top of the 18," Ueland said. "I just hit it, (left) side net. It was perfect."
Tates Creek tried to press forward, but the Blue Devils seemingly had a steel curtain protecting goalkeeper Ryan Smalls.
"All year we've just been getting better and better, and playing with more confidence," Coach Tim Bernardi said. "We felt like it was going to be a pretty tight match, which it was, and just getting that one goal was a pivotal point in the game. And, then, just being able to hang on to the 1-0 lead."
Henry Clay has won its last six matches, including four by shutout. Overall, the Blue Devils have posted 12 shutouts while outscoring the opposition 61-17.
"Two lucky drop balls. Walker Ueland ends our season, takes two titles from us," Turek said. "But my hat's off to him — two great finishes by a great player."
