Lafayette's softball team didn't exactly spend its spring break lounging by the pool.
"It definitely wasn't a week on the beach in Florida," senior pitcher Cassidy Taylor said with a smile.
Instead, the sixth-ranked team in the state spent its break losing three in a row to some of the nation's top teams at an event in North Carolina.
Coach Dana Taylor called the trip a "somewhat humbling experience" for the Generals, but she said she also thought the losses would make them a hungrier group when they got home.
Never miss a local story.
"We knew someone was going to get a hurting after we got back," she said.
That hurting was applied at No. 23 Lexington Catholic, 12-0 in five innings on a blustery Tuesday night.
"All in all, our trip motivated us for when we got back to show that we weren't the team we were on spring break," Cassidy Taylor said.
The senior pitcher had a perfect game broken up in the bottom of the fifth inning by the Knights' Beth Mueller.
"Maybe we sat out too long," the pitcher said to explain the hit. "Beth's a good hitter, though. I'm a little disappointed (over losing the perfect game), but we got the win, and that's all that matters."
Taylor helped make sure of it with her bat, too.
She was one of two Lafayette hitters to go 3-for-4 with three RBI. Fellow senior Alyssa Oakley was the other.
Taylor homered over the center-field fence in the fourth inning and produced a two-run double in the five-run fifth.
Oakley had a double and two singles.
"It definitely felt good to finally open up and start hitting like we know we can," Oakley said.
That was part of the lesson the Generals (2-3) learned on their not-so-leisurely spring-break trip, Oakley said.
"We learned to win every inning, to constantly get runs, to not take innings off," Oakley said.
Her two-run double in the first inning put the first runs on the board for Lafayette.
Alexis Hull, who had two hits, also knocked in a run with her double in that inning.
Brittany Sims and Lauren Mitchell also had two hits apiece for the Generals.
