Nathan Boston of Woodford County did himself and his dad proud by winning a state wrestling title at the Kentucky Horse Park's Alltech Arena on Saturday night.
Boston, a 113-pound junior, was the most impressive participant in the 50th annual KHSAA State Tournament. He pinned all five of his opponents, including John Hernandez of Henry Clay in the finals.
"I planned on coming in and dominating. I wanted to get the most pins in the quickest time in the tournament, and I did," he said after capping a 53-0 season.
Boston won a state title in Indiana as a freshman when the family was living in Indianapolis. They moved to Kentucky last year, giving Nathan a chance to wrestle for Woodford County, just like his dad did. Rob Boston placed third in the state for the Yellowjackets and Coach Joe Carr Sr. almost 25 years ago.
"My dad told me a lot of stories, how it was great wrestling for Coach Carr, and stories about Joe-Joe (Carr Jr.) when he was little," Nathan said. "He was excited I'd get to wrestle for the same coach he did."
Joe Carr Sr. said Nathan "did an excellent job. He's a national caliber wrestler and we're fortunate to have him."
Boston was the only central Kentucky wrestler to win an individual state title.
Hernandez, a junior, was ranked sixth in the state but battled his way to the finals against Boston.
Woodford County brothers Trevor and Kyle Lawson, were runners-up. Trevor, a 106-pound seventh-grader, lost 3-1 to Jorge Vega of Fern Creek. Kyle, a 132-pound eighth-grader, lost 8-5 to unbeaten Sean Fausz of Campbell County.
Franklin County junior Tevon Clay took a 52-1 record into the 152 finals, but lost to St. Xavier's unbeaten Justin Lampe, who finished off a 51-0 season.
Lafayette's 6-foot-7, 240-pound freshman Landon Young made a big impression. Rated ninth in the state, he fought his way through the bracket and into the finals where he lost to No. 1 Bobby Bryant of Trinity 11-3.
"I surprised myself, but at the same time i knew hard work and dedication would eventually pay off. It paid off a little faster than I thought it would."
Henry Clay junior Mike Whalen, a state champ at 106 pounds last year, moved up two weight classes this season and placed third at 120.
St. X claimed its first state title since 2001 and third overall. The Tigers' crucial victory came at 160 pounds when Hunter French upset Campbell County's top-seeded Stephen Myers 4-3.
French's win secured the team title for the Tigers over defending champion Campbell County. French was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler.
