University of Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops will be visiting Madison Southern star Damien Harris for tonight’s rivalry game against Madison Central.
Stoops’ mode of transportation — yes, he will land near the field in a helicopter — is getting the most attention so far today. But the most important aspect of the visit is that it will be the only time Stoops sees Harris play all season.
College coaches are allowed to visit a prospective recruit only once per season, starting Sept. 1. During that visit, only two members of the coaching staff are permitted to go. (Running backs coach Chad Scott will accompany Stoops tonight).
That means this will be the last time any of UK’s coaches see Harris — the nation’s No. 1 running back — play in a high school game. Stoops will be permitted to visit Harris once a week starting in December, though the local star is planning to announce his college decision Dec. 13.
Never miss a local story.
Tonight’s trip by the UK coaches also comes on the eve of Harris’ first official visit, which will be to Ohio State starting Saturday. The Buckeyes are widely viewed as Kentucky’s top competition for Harris’ commitment.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Madison Southern High School in Berea.
