NICHOLASVILLE — Tie outcomes can be disappointing sometimes, but not Wednesday.
"I'm glad we showed up tonight," Creek Coach Bo Lankster said. "We wanted to give West a good match and kind of use it as a little bit of a measuring stick. ... They're a great, great team. I don't know that they've been beaten by anyone in Kentucky, and I think they have a chance to make a deep post-season run. And for our girls to come out and play a good match, I'm really proud of them. We played a lot of players and they all rose to the occasion."
The match was the regular-season finale for West Jessamine (16-1-3). Tates Creek (6-9-3) still has a suspended game to complete with Lexington Christian.
Never miss a local story.
"Bo does a good job and they play physical," said Kevin Wright, coach of the Lady Colts. "They're real organized. That's a good test for us. That's what we needed. That's why we've played the schedule we've played, to prepare you for the post-season, and that's what matters. ... That felt like a post-season game right there. Back and forth. They gave us that physical aspect that's good for you. I thought it was good for both teams."
After a scoreless first half, both teams found the net in a less-than-three-minute span.
West Jessamine struck first when Sarah Wiggins scored with 31:32 to play.
The counter-attack was set up when Eva Mitchell dribbled through traffic to near midfield, then led Wiggins with a pass up the middle.
Wiggins took it from there, going one-on-one with the goalie and burying a shot from about 12-to-15 yards into the low right corner.
"It was a good game for us," Wiggins said. "They play a different style than us, for sure. They play a lot more physical. But it was a good check for us."
The Commodores countered with 28:35 left, off a free kick by Bailey Lankster. Jordan Chlebowy took Lankster's kick and headed a rocket into the goal.
Like Wiggins and the coaches, Chlebowy thought there was plenty to be gained from the tie.
"They're a very good team, so I think this is a good marker as we continue on to post-season," she said. "It's a good test for us because they're very, very fast up top. They're very skilled and a very strong team. I think we'll face more teams that are like that — that are very fast up top, so it was a good test for us."
Bailey Lankster nearly gave Creek a lead about three minutes after Chlebowy's goal, with a shot that grazed the crossbar.
"We thought coming into the year that we would get a few more of those," Bo Lankster said of Chlebowy's goal. "But it just hasn't worked out that way. Every goal is precious for our team. We haven't given up many, but we haven't scored many. So we get real excited when we see the ball going into the back of the net."
