Lexington Christian struck early and used its best defensive effort of the season to pick up a 2-0 win over Sayre in the semifinals of the 11th Region All “A” Classic at Capitol View Park on Tuesday night.
It was the Eagles’ first win in the small-school rivalry since they defeated the Spartans 3-2 on penalty kicks in 2013. Sayre blanked LCA 3-0 in last year’s 11th Region All “A” Classic finals. The teams did not meet in 2014.
Tyler Dobbs and Roman Casper both scored in the first half for LCA, which recorded its first shutout of the season. The victory was the Eagles’ first since a 3-1 final over East Jessamine to open the year; it snapped a three-game winless streak during which the team lost twice.
Never miss a local story.
LCA will play Frankfort ]in the finals on Thursday. The State Journal in Frankfort wrote about the Panthers’ 7-2 win over Berea in Tuesday’s first semifinal.
Sayre fell to 0-4 and was shutout for the second time in Frankfort this season. Franklin County defeated the Spartans 2-0 in the season-opener for both programs.
