No. 1 Lexington Catholic's quest for a fifth 11th Region baseball title in seven years won't be easy.
The Knights will most likely have to beat a pair of top-20 teams just to get to the finals of the region, which starts on Monday at Tates Creek.
Sunday's draw matched Lexington Catholic against No. 16 Franklin County in the opening round.
The Flyers, who last won the region in 2001, are led by senior catcher and Kentucky signee Zach Arnold. Franklin County will be trying to send retiring coach Deron McDonald out on a winning note.
If Lexington Catholic gets by the Flyers, it will probably face No. 10 Bryan Station in the semifinals. The Defenders, who drew Model as a first-round opponent, figure to save ace lefthander and UK signee Ryne Combs for the semifinals.
In the lower bracket, No. 8 Madison Central will face Scott County in the first round. The Cardinals have a losing record (16-19-1), but they can't be overlooked. Led by the strong pitching of William Warman, they upset Henry Clay in the district.
No. 15 Woodford County will take on Paul Laurence Dunbar on Monday. The Yellowjackets' pitching staff is led by junior standouts Clinton Hollon and Logan Parrett.
