Twelve boys and 16 girls in the class of 2018 have committed to play an open-to-the-public scrimmage to help prepare their senior counterparts for the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Classic this weekend.
The scrimmages will be held Thursday night at Mercer County High School. The girls’ game will begin at 6 p.m. with the boys’ contest to begin immediately following the end of the first game. Entry is $5 but individuals who are 12-years-old or younger will be admitted free of charge.
Local standout Trevon Faulkner, who helped lead Mercer County to the state tournament and a No. 1 ranking as a sophomore in 2016, will play for the boys. Adam Kunkel, a major contributor to Cooper’s state runner-up finish this season, and CJ Frederick, a rising star out of Covington Catholic, also will play.
Also on the boys’ roster are: Michael Burns, Butler; Trey Hill, Pleasure Ridge Park; Zach Kelsch, Simon Kenton; Mickey Pearson, John Hardin; Cobe Penny, Anderson County; Skylar Potter, Warren Central; Andrew Taylor, Corbin; Jake Walters, Covington Catholic.
Never miss a local story.
Scott Chalk, game director for the Kentucky All-Stars and who will coach the junior team, said that this unit isn’t officially a junior All-Star team.
“But when you look at the list of ’em, it’s some of the best juniors in the state,” Chalk said. “Not all of ’em, but it’s a pretty good representative group. … It’s no doubt a group of guys who will have an opportunity to make the senior All-Star team next year, for sure.”
Five juniors from Mercer County’s girls’ state championship team will play, including Sweet Sixteen MVP Seygan Robins, a University of Louisville commit who’s established herself as a frontrunner for the 2018 Miss Basketball award. Fellow Louisville commit Mykasa Robinson of Ashland Blazer also will participate.
Blair Green, a Harlan County standout who’s committed to the University of Kentucky, will play in the game. Five other players scheduled to participate have already committed to Division I schools: Grace Berger (Sacred Heart, Indiana); Ciaja Harbison (Male, St. Louis); Molly Lockhart (Butler, St. Louis); Ally Niece (Simon Kenton, Northern Kentucky) and Emma Souder (Mercer County, NKU).
Other girls playing in the game are: Emma Davis, Mercer County; Danielle Feldkamp, Mercy; Lexi Held, Cooper; Jaela Johnson, Manual; Faith Lake, Mercer County; Lexi Lake, Mercer County; Keely Morrow, Bowling Green; Peyton Riddle, Scott County.
